Introduction One of the major tasks of government is to provide goods and services to the people. There are however many factors that hinder the smooth delivery of goods and services. Corruption is one of the factors. A link has been established between corruption and economic stagnation. Corruption leads to misallocation of resources meant for uplifting of the majority members of the public for the benefit of a few. It is a universal scourge that has been described differently by various schools of thought. It tends to limit citizens access to free goods and services and reduces freedom of political choice in elections. It can also be linked to the escalation of poverty, as the prevalence of corrupt practices socially excludes the poor†¦show more content†¦In 2008 however, the Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) slightly improved, awarding Zambia a score of 2, 8, suggesting progress in terms of control of corruption, as perceived by analysts and busines smen (2008). This could indicate that Zambia’s efforts against corruption are slowly starting to yield results. However, there is still a long way to go. Strategies employed and their efficiencies There are a number of laws put in place to combat corruption (National anti-Corruption policy: 2009). These laws are meant to empower different institutions in the fight against corruption. They include: the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Act No. 42 of 1996; Public Procurement Act No. 12 of 2008; Parliamentary and Ministerial Code of Conduct Act No. 35 0f 1994; The Electoral Act No. 12 of 2006; The Prohibition and Prevention of Money Laundering Act No. 14 of 2001; The Bank of Zambia Anti-Money Laundering Directives 2004. Despite the above legal framework, there are still challenges to the fight against corruption such as enhancing and harmonising anti-corruption laws and regulations, reviewing and enacting relevant legislation in the fight against corruption and domesticating provisions in international instruments. With the aforementioned legal framework prevailing to combat corruption, it is necessary to examine the institutional framework that exists to implement the laws established. Thoreau’s â€Å"Resistance to Civil Government is the conformation of his desire for a free thinking nation that knows right from wrong and is willing to fight for what they believe in. But while these ideals are true and good in moderation, they can be made wrong if followed to the extreme. I believe that while Thoreau was a great writer with great ideas, a lot of what he believed was a little too over the top. It is this amendment that has led the country through some of its greatest movements and has supported its best causes. Henry Thoreau was very fond of the freedom of speech, and made this quite clear by his many essays regarding the government. However, as he says in â€Å"Resistance†, the power of speech is not enough. One must â€Å"do† something in order to get what they want. In Thoreau’s case, this consisted of living alone in the woods, not paying taxes and rotting in jail for a night. While it is often said that actions speak louder than words, I believe that a well written speech can do a lot more good than a halfcocked action. For, Thoreau’s achievement did not come from spending a night in jail, but from using the experience symbolically in a published work. Had he not written about it, no one would have known, and the statement would not have been made. Thoreau seems to have thought himself above his fellow Americans in intelligence, despite his claims to the contrary. His seclusion from his neighbors so that he could meditate on his own, his constant use of words like â€Å"ignorant† to describe his countrymen, and his refusal to pay his taxes for â€Å"a society that he has not joined† all show of his arrogant nature. Thoreau tried to save face by visiting his neighbors once in a while in order to appear sociable, and he claimed that he was okay with paying taxes for the institutions that he took part in. But if I had been Thoreau’s neighbor, I would have been offended by his visits, knowing that he comes only to patronize and bombard me with his superior knowledge. I also feel that such a man of the people, as Thoreau claimed to be, should be more than willing to support a tax for an institution he freely chose not to be a part of if only to support his fellow man who does not feel the same way. Resistance† is full of Thoreau’s ideals and beliefs, and while they may seem solid on the surface, they are backed by the arrogant views of a man that believes his opinion is best. Just because Thoreau’s ideas work for him, do not mean that they would work for all of America. And even though he spins his words in such a pretty and convincing way, I personally can find better ways to make a difference than sitting, uselessly, behind bars. Commencement Speech Essay Graduation brings upon all possible feelings of relief for Deerfield students. At the time of graduation, high school seniors have a two or three month long break before we get to continue in the next unknown and exciting directions that we are each on. For those of us who were born and raised on the North Shore, it can often be far too easy to lose perspective and appreciation for how lucky we all are, so I want to take this time to think about some of the responsibilities that come with graduating from a school like Deerfield. This past February, I got to go on the DHS home build trip to Costa Rica. I worked on one house for three days, and at the end we presented the home to its new family. The very concept of building a real home for a family and directly seeing how it affects them is quite humbling. However, of all of the things I experienced while I was there, I saw one thing that really helped me understand just how lucky I am. The house we were building was located at the end of a long street with lots of other inadequate homes worthy of our charity. On the side of one of these homes that belonged to a family with little children, I saw lots of intricate and colorful sketches and drawings, which really depressed me the more I thought about it. I realized that some little kid in that house has artistic interest, and artistic potential. They have something that theyre good at, and that they enjoy doing. But that kid will never have the opportunities to put his or her artistic abilities to use because of the geographical and economical factors that give him or her access to so few resources. Thats really what being a kid is all about; exploring different hobbies and activities to find what you like doing and what you have potential in. When I showed interest in music from an early age, my parents bought me a guitar for my birthday and signed me up for lessons nearby. Because I actually had a guitar to play and had access to someone who could teach me, I developed my skills and became very passionate about music. That little boy or girl doesnt have the same luxuries. They cant drive to the store and buy an easel and a full pallet of paint or a box of crayons. The family doesnt have any way of getting the child formal training to help them progress. Thats the sad truth of growing up in a third world country that often goes unnoticed by some of us here at Deerfield. Some students dont recognize how fortunate they are to have all the things they have, and some students assume that the circumstances we are in here are more or less the same around the world. Learning to be thankful for what we have here is a good first step, but it isnt enough. I know that in order to show how thankful I am for the opportunity I had with guitar, I have to really commit to it and optimize my potential. What I mean by this is that I always have to have it in the back of my mind that there are thousands of kids who would do anything to own a guitar and be able to take guitar lessons. Keeping that in mind will remind me how special it is that I have these opportunities, rather than just forming the assumption that those things are automatically given to everyone who wants them. To take this and apply it to school, the only way to truly show that we are thankful is to use the resources and opportunities we have been given to have a positive impact on the world. The ultimate slap in the face to the kids all over the world without access to quality education would be to not live up to our full potential as Deerfield graduates.
